Why The Guestbook Is Turned Off | |
|
I rent space on a computer from a "hosting" company to keep this Frontier Town website on. Because the computer is very powerful, the hosting company puts many web sites on it. I share the computer the Frontier Town web site is on with hundreds of other websites.
To make managing all those web sites easier, the hosting company uses a piece of software called CPanel. CPanel provides a number of services, like a guest book, that those web sites can use. Unfortunately, the guest book service is shared by all of those hundreds of web sites that are on the same computer. When I used to have the ability to leave a guest book entry turned on, there was some information on the Guest Book page of the Frontier Town web site that told the CPanel guestbook program what to do with the guest book entries that visitors to the web site left. To "turn off" the guest book, I removed that information. Unfortunately, some spammers (hackers) from overseas recorded that information and are still using it to post entries to the Frontier Town web site guest book every minute or so. The entries contain links to some very unsavory sites on the Internet. The way the cPanel guestbook program is written, it sends back a copy of every entry that is posted. In addition to renting space for my files, I get a certain amount of "bandwidth" from the hosting company each month. That is how much data visitors to my site can download - like the pages and pictures you look at. These confirmation messages are eating up all of my monthly bandwidth. Because the CPanel guestbook program is shared by all of the hundreds of web sites on the computer, I cannot "turn it off", nor can I delete it. So I am looking for a new hosting company who does not use CPanel. when I find one, I will move my web site and set up a different guest book program. Until that time, I thank you once again for your patience. |
