Update for 6 December 2012
Season's Greetings
A picture of the church at Frontier Town during the winter that I obtained from a visitor to my web site. I think it is a perfect combination of Frontier Town and the peaceful spirit of this time of year. May that spirit touch all of you who visit this website, and I wish you all a wonderful New Year.

Update for 2 July 2012
Frontier Town Day 2012 has come and gone - it was held at Gokey's Trading Post, North Hudson, NY on Sunday, 1 July. According to Sharon Hamner-Kelly on facebook:

Frontier Town Day 2012 turned out to be a very small, intimate gathering of folks.

She has posted more information about Frontier Town Day, including pictures, on the Frontier Town Facebook page.

I do occasionally add more to this site (though I am slower than I used to be), so be sure to check back occasionally - you can determine what has changed since your last visit by looking at the Past Updates page.

And for everyone who has, or who will, email me, please have patience if I am slow to reply. I do, eventually, answer every email I receive.

Addendum added 25 June 2012
Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion that personal considerations make it impossible for me to take the time to go to Frontier Town Day this year. So I will NOT be at the festivities next Sunday. I wish the best of luck to all who can attend and would greatly appreciate it if someone who goes would supply me with a report at the email address below. Thank you, and I am sorry that I will not be able to make it.

Update for 24 June 2012
Frontier Town Day 2012 is this coming Sunday - July 1!
No, it's not the Main Street of Prairie Junction, but it is a street of western false fronts in North Hudson, NY. It's Gokey's Trading Post, and it's the location of Frontier Town Day 2012! Here is the confirmation from Caleb Bauer, organizer of Frontier Town Day 2012, on the Frontier Town Facebook page (there was some question as to whether or not there were enough volunteers to put on Frontier Town Day this year):

I'm making the call. We WILL have Frontier Town Day one way or another. I already know that people are planning to be there. Even if it's just the small handful of people, then Frontier Town Day will have been a success. If even a small group of people still care enough for Frontier Town that they will get together regardless of how hopeless their cause may seem, then the love for and spirit of Frontier Town lives on, and that's what Frontier Town Day is all about. Bring your displays and tables if you can. If you can wrangle up a pistol to fire blanks with, link up with Steve Gross and have a gunfight. Make posters and hang them all over town, and any surrounding areas you can. Unfortunately I can't be there. I'm working at the Frontier Town in Ocean City, Maryland. It'll happen. That's the end of my rant.

Caleb also asked me to mention that "food is byo".

I do occasionally add more to this site (though I am slower than I used to be), so be sure to check back occasionally - you can determine what has changed since your last visit by looking at the Past Updates page.

Update for 25 March 2012
Save the date - July 1, 2012!
No, it's not the Main Street of Prairie Junction, but it is a street of western false fronts in North Hudson, NY. It's Gokey's Trading Post, and it's the location of Frontier Town Day 2012!

Frontier Town Day started in the fall of 2011. I've added a new link below for Frontier Town Day. You can follow it to see a page of pictures from that first Frontier Town Day, a day filled with remembrances from those who worked at Frontier Town over the years.

As Frontier Town Day grows, there will be more memories from the past but there will also be more of the action that we all remember Frontier Town for. The pillory that was available for pictures at the 2011 Frontier Town Day, and was always a favorite photo op for visitors to Frontier Town over the years, will return. In addition, plans have already been made for shoot outs in the street and a demonstration of period firearms, and more plans are being made. I will continue to update this notice as those plans come together.

(If you would like to participate in a shoot out, let Caleb Bauer know by sending him an email at calebbauer23[at]yahoo.com, or leaving a message for him at the Frontier Town group on Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/FrontierTowncommited, or email me at the address below and I'll pass the message on to him – be sure to include Frontier Town Day in the subject.)

So mark Sunday, July 1, 2012 on your calendar and make your way that day to North Hudson to share in Frontier Town Day 2012!

Update for 12 February 2012
Save the date!
Frontier Town Day 2012 is going to be Sunday, 1 July in North Hudson. Keep watching this site for more information about the day's events - you can be sure it is going to be an exciting time for all!
I've finally replaced my Season's Greetings. I had meant to do so last weekend since it was Super Bowl Sunday but I have so many new pages to add to the site with this update that I just didn't get it done.

I've added a page of pictures from inside the park in 2010, plus six pages of pictures from inside the park this year. I've also added a cool pair of pictures to the Miscellaneous Pictures that show the same couple from visits to Frontier Town in the 1970s and in 2010. All these new pages can be reached from the Picture Galleries page.

Now that the date has been set for this year's Frontier Town Day I really have to get a page up with my pictures from the 2011 Frontier Town Day - hopefully next weekend, so check back.

I do occasionally add more to this site (though I am slower than I used to be), so be sure to check back occasionally - you can determine what has changed since your last visit by looking at the Past Updates page.

Season's Greetings
../ Wow - another year has passed and it's the holiday season again! 2011 was an exceedingly busy year. In the spirit of the season I offer you a picture of Main Street, Prairie Junction, Frontier Town as it is today, which was sent to me by a visitor to this website. May the spirit of the season touch all of you who visit this website, and I wish you all a wonderful New Year.
I have also added a number of pictures that I have received through email to my Miscellaneous Pictures page. You can get to that page through the Picture Galleries page.

Update for 18 September 2011
I just returned from Frontier Town Day 2011. What a great time it was in North Hudson!

Here are some pictures of the event. I hope to get a full report onto this website next weekend.

Plans are already being made for a North Hudson Frontier Town Day 2012, so keep checking back at this website for details as they become available.

Frontier Town Day is for everyone, whether you worked at Frontier Town or not.

Even if you never went to Frontier Town you should start making plans to attend in 2012!

Update for 7 August 2011
The Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society is sponsoring a Frontier Town Day on 17 September 2011 from 10am-3pm!

Here is what the North Hudson town website says:

September 17 - Frontier Town Day will include remembrances of Frontier Town photos, DVD's and personal accounts. Sponsored by Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society. For more info contact Lois Clark at 532-0533 or loclark@localnet.com. (Check back for time and more details)

I have seen postings elsewhere that state it will be at the North Hudson Town Hall and Fire House Complex, but I would suggest using the contact information in the listing to verify the place.

Update for 17 July 2011
I've added two new pages of pictures that have been sent to me by visitors to this website. The first shows pictures from Scott P of a visit to Frontier Town on a family vacation in 1967. The second contains pictures from Erin S and is a little less upbeat - it shows the state of the park in this spring of 2011.

Both of these pages can be reached from the Picture Galleries page.

Update for 5 June 2011
It's been an incredibly busy spring - I became a grandfather early in April, among many other things that have been going on - so I have been tardy in updating this site.

I've added a number of pictures which I have received from visitors to this website to the Miscellaneous Pictures page. One of those was from, and depicts, Aaron Darcy, from San Diego California, who in 1994 or 1995 was Speedy Gonzales and the cavalry scout in Frontier Town.

I got three pictures that I felt merited a page of their own - they are of the Johnny Cash concert that was held at Frontier Town. I had heard of it but I had never seen any pictures from it.

All these pictures can be reached from the Picture Galleries page.

Another big bit of news I got this spring was from one of the organizers of a movement to have Frontier Town re-opened as an historic landmark. Here is his post (slightly edited) from the guest book:

I was only five when Frontier Town closed. I don't remember much, aside from the train robbers , but one thing that I do remember is the happiness that I had whenever I was there. I was even friends with Sheriff Goat! He always told me, "Work hard, be a man of your word, be strong." I live by these words to this day. Sheriff Goat had a great impact on my life, may he rest in peace. Someday we'll see each other again in the presence of our Savior. Anywho, there is currently an organization being formed and a plan being created to bring Frontier Town back. We have even contacted local town supervisors, state senators, and senators to D.C. People love this place. Petitions are being hung up all over the area so that people can sign to show their support. We are on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/home.php?sk=group_183127821732831&ap=1 and we have a website. We would love for as many people as possible to be part of this. People love Frontier Town! Now it's time that we do something about it!

-Caleb Bauer

Update for 6 February 2011
I figure that by Super Bowl Sunday it's finally time to take down my Season's Greetings.

I've added some things to the site: a new page of Miscellaneous Pictures where I can put single pictures that visitors to this site email to me and a link to a new Flickr slideshow of what the Frontier Town site looked like this past summer. Both can be reached from the Picture Galleries page. I've also added a new Links page where I will post URLs I come across that might be of interest to visitors to this website.

Season's Greetings
I can't believe that another year has passed and the holiday season has once again rolled around! Where does the time go? In the spirit of the season I offer you a picture of a Frontier Town souvenir plate graciously sent to me by a visitor to this website. I have some more new material to add to the web site, and as I should have some time to add it since I'm planning to take some time off from work around the holidays, check back around the New Year for more new content. May the spirit of the season touch all of you who visit this website, and I wish you all a wonderful New Year.
I have added links to two sets of pictures on Picasa that show the state that the Frontier Town site was in this past summer. You can get to them through the Picture Galleries page.

Update for 11 July 2010
Another anniversary, the 58th, of the original opening of Frontier Town in 1952 has come and gone. Today I've added two new pages of pictures which span from that original year into the 1970s. You can find them, labeled as new, at the bottom of the Pictures from when Frontier Town was open page.

I am leaving this question about the badge pictured because I have not received any answers yet. Please email me if you know anything about it:

The visitors to this website who own the badge pictured would like to know if the information they have about the badge - that it was the badge of Robert Zuckerwar, from Gloversville, who played the part of the marshal at Frontier Town in the 1960s - is true. I found the following image in a home movie I made in 1968. The movie is grainy, and the camera jiggled, but I think this might show the badge being worn by a lawman at Frontier Town:
If anyone could shed more light on the history of this badge, please email me at the address below. Thanks.

A visitor to this website maintains his own website named Project Absurd, and he has created two pages filled with pictures and videos that he took exploring the Frontier Town site (physical site, not website ) during the summer and fall of 2009. I have added links to those two pages on the Pictures of Frontier Town since it closed page.
Update for 31 January 2010
On the last day of January I figure the time has come that I really must remove my Season's Greeting message for another year. While doing that I have added some new pictures to the site that I received during the fall:

You'll find links to two new pages of pictures on the Pictures from when Frontier Town was open page

And a link to a new picture on the Pictures of Frontier Town since it closed page

I also added some interesting facts about the history of Frontier Town that were sent to me by a visitor to this website to the History of Frontier Town page.

Update for 7 September 2009
Labor Day weekend has given me some time to catch my breath and do a little work on this website.

I have added a page of pictures from a trip that the Clackett family made to Frontier Town in 1973, and three pages of pictures of what Frontier Town looks like today, during the summer of 2009. Follow the link to Picture Galleries below to see these new pages.

I also added a new section called The People of Frontier Town. From time to time I receive through email rememberances from people who used to work at Frontier Town. I love to hear their stories and feel it gives another perspective on this place that meant so much to me. I have added this section as a place to share those stories that the people submitting them are willing for me to share. You can find a new link to this section below.

And I also added an editor's note to an entry in the Memories section. Matoaka Little Eagle, Swift Eagle's and Chee Chee Bird's daughter, pointed out that the entry in the "Memories" section incorrectly stated that Chee Chee Bird was of Cherokee descent. Matoaka let me know that, "She was Chickahominy from Virginia, not Cherokee."

Tammy has asked that I post this item once again, until May 1st:

Hey Gang, I am currently a History Major at Plattsburgh State and I am currently getting ready to take on my senior thesis. I have decided to write it on Frontier Town and how it impacted our lives and the lives of all the tourist that walked through its gates. This is not only my thesis but it will be a labor of love. As many of you have, I spend the best years of my teens working with in the walls of Frontier. Working with the late Evelyn Clark, and Clarence Canary. Working with so many wonderful people that are still alive, like Dottie Liberty. Dot I still will not eat anyone elses pea soup except yours and mine because you taught me how to make it. ::::So here is what I need. I would love to have people write me about how their employement or visit to frontier town affected their lives, either for the good for the bad. I would really like to hear from as many old employees as possible. My email address is rock8154@mail.plattsburgh.edu or adirondacklady66@yahoo.com. I have still not re-enabled the ability to leave a Guest Book entry. Click Here for an explanation as to why (it's rather technical). Most of any free time I have to spend working on this web site right now I am spending looking into getting a different hosting provider. When that is done the ability to leave a Guest Book entry will be turned back on. Thank you for your continued patience, and please do still look at the Guest Book page to view entries that have been left in the past.

I did take the time to put together some pages of pictures of Frontier Town taken this year that I have received. They are accessible from the Picture Galleries page. WARNING - if you want to remember Frontier Town as it was I would suggest NOT viewing the Inside the Park - 2008 page.

If you checked this web site yesterday, you saw a slightly different update for 6 September 2008 - in the past 24 hours I have received about 100 pictures from visits to Frontier Town that visitors to this web site sent me. While adding the pictures to the web site for you to see, I have reorganized the Picture Galleries page today to make pictures easier to find. I love getting pictures from visitors to this web site - each new picture of Frontier Town that I see takes me back to my magical visits there.

I am going to leave this item through the end of November in the hopes that Tammy can get as many memories as possible (she will be taking memories or comments and any information till Dec of 08):

As the showing of "JAWS" at the Palace Theatre in Albany, featuring a Frontier Town ad in the pre-show "trailer fest", has come and gone, I felt it was time to update this page once again to remove the announcement of that showing. While working on the web site I also re-organized the Guest Book page a bit, moving all of the entries through May 2008 to their own page. I also added pages of pictures from my 1966 and 1967 trips to Frontier Town to the Picture Galleries page.

Update for 26 April 2008
I have received two items from visitors to this website that I wanted to share with others who may visit here. The first was an email I received from a fellow who has a collection of old advertisements that were run before movies at local theaters. He wrote me to let me know that an old Frontier Town ad will be included in the final show of the season. Here is what he told me:

I was the guy who contacted you before Christmas about the vintage FT ads being run during the Christmas movies at The Palace Theatre in Albany. With a little more notice this time, I'm writing to let you know that on May 19th, the 60-sec ad that I have in my collection will be running during a special bonus pre-show "trailer fest" before "JAWS" which is the last show of the 07-08 movie season. As a "final show" bonus, I've assembled a 40 minute presentation showing all sorts of vintage theatre ads and trailers that we wouldn't normally run during the normally scheduled shows....kinda like a "spring cleaning" sort of thing. JAWS begins at 7PM, but the pre show will get under way at approx. 6:20 PM or so. The reels are already assembled, and the FT ad is spliced in and ready to run. Tickets for the show are (as usual) only $5 a pop, which is a great deal that gets you into a beautiful vintage theatre to see a classic film on the big screen. I figured I'd pass this news along to you since we have about a month or so to go until showtime. (We've still got 2 shows to go BEFORE Jaws--Spartacus & Lawrence Of Arabia.)

The second item was posted to the Guest Book. I wanted to display it on the first page of the website in the hopes that more visitors to the site would get a chance to see it:

Hope to hear from many of you soon. - Tammy Whitty -Rock

Update for 27 January 2008
As January is almost over I figured it was time to remove my Season's Greetings.

The move to a new web hosting service and forum provider seems to have gone fairly smoothly.

The biggest addition to report in this update are the paragraph above and the timeline I added to the History of Frontier Town page. Both are prompted by the fact that I still occasionally receive emails from folks inquiring about the current hours for Frontier Town as they want to visit. I hate to have to be the one to break the news to them - I guess my website was not as clear as it might be that, as much as I too would like to visit Frontier Town, it looks like that will never be possible again.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT 27 December 2007 As I mentioned earlier, due to multiple problems with my previous web hosting provider, I have moved my Frontier Town web site to a new provider. With the move, the existing forum will cease to work on January 1, 2008. I have created a new forum and have recreated all of the existing posts from the old forum in the new forum. Thank you for your patience - SteveEND OF SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT 27 December 2007
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT 07 December 2007 I have hassled with the hosting company I was using for quite a while - they have finally given me the instance of bad customer service that broke the camel's back. I am in the middle of switching to a different, local (for me), hosting company. I find that the pages come up much faster now, hopefully you will too. I have not loaded all the pictures yet - I hope to get that done this weekend - so please bear with me. If you have any old bookmarks for this site with "steveandsusangross.net" as part of the domain name, please re-bookmark as, you will note, frontiertown.net is now the actual domain name (it was a redirect previously). Thank you for your patience - SteveEND OF SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT 07 December 2007
Update for 22 November 2007
Season's Greetings
Another year has rolled past. As frequent visitors to the site may have noticed, my updates come further and further apart. Luckily the Guest Book and Forum allow those with an interest in Frontier Town to express themselves without me as a go between. May the spirit of the season touch all of you who visit this website, and I wish you all a wonderful New Year.

Update for 7 October 2007
Another holiday weekend is upon us and I am able to spend a little time adding to the website. I have received a couple of emails from visitors to the site that contained pictures. I have put those pictures on pages which can be accessed from the Pictures Galleries link below - look for the new indicator.

The visitor counter is about to rollover 10,000 - an indication that though Frontier Town closed almost 10 years ago there is still interest in Frontier town out there.

Update for 4 July 2007
Happy Independence Day! It was fifty five years ago today that Art Bensen opened Frontier Town, so it seemed appropriate that I should take some time to work on the website today.

It appears that the efforts my hosting provider and I have taken are working in cutting down on the ability of hackers to exploit this site. I will continue to keep an eye on them, but I now have some time to actually work on content.

Thanks to information provided to me by visitors to this website, I have added a new entry to the "Where to see some of Frontier Town today" page, added a new "Airpark" page and added a new page of pictures to the "Picture Galleries" page. In addition, I have added a page with pictures from my 1965 visit to the "Picture Galleries" page.

Also from visitors to this website I have learned that on 8 June 2007 the Press Republican reported that Panther Mountain Water Park lost its appeal to have the tax sale of the Frontier Town property reversed. Seems to me that this may mean the new owners will now take some action on the property.

Update for 20 May 2007
Some visitors to this site who check it from time to time may have noticed it was unavailable for a couple of days during the past week. As I have reported in this space in the past, my hosting service had recently been attacked by hackers. The hosting service moved my site to a more secure server this week - though it caused some interruption in service, I think that things will be more stable going forward.

Speaking of getting ahead of the hackers (for more on my gripes about hackers, take a look at the Past Updates page), I am downright embarassed by some of the entries that are left in the guestbook for this site. For that reason, I am institutuing a new policy for the Guestbook page. Entries will no longer show up on the page as soon as they are made. All entries will be saved to a file, and each morning I will move any new entries to the Guestbook page where they can be viewed by visitors to the site. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but this will allow me to delete objectionable entries before anyone else gets to see them.

Additional Update for 21 May 2007 I have also made the General Discussion Forum Private. Anyone can read from the forum, but only members of the Frontier Town Fans group can post to the forum. If you would like to post to the forum and are not already a member (the previous members of the forum have all been made members of the Frontier Town Fans group), please register. I will make legitimate users members of the group so that they may post to the forum the next day. Once again, I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but this should disable the ability of dishonorable persons to make posts to the forum.

End of Update
Update for 22 April 2007
I feel as if I am engaged in a war with hackers. There are three ways that this website is attacked:

     1) There are those who leave entries in the guestbook wanting to sell drugs, or pornography, or body part enlargement, or counterfeit watches or other goods
     2) There are those who leave similar entries in the forum
     3) And the most malicious are those who actually gain access to the hosting company's servers and change the content of the web pages on this site

I usually check the website daily, sometimes more often, for all three types of attacks and correct them when I find them. The past two weeks have seen an increase of all three types of attack. It did not help that I was out of town and unable to access the Internet last weekend. I am hoping that the frequency will slow, as I find myself spending all the time I have to work on the website fixing up the damage done by these jerks. There are a number of pages that I have been meaning to build and add, but I just don't have the time as I have to invest it all in fending off the hackers.

I feel that both the guest book and forum have proved worthwhile as I see that connections have been made between others who appreciate Frontier Town, so I do not want to lock them down. We will have to see. I am also thinking of changing hosting services if they cannot get a handle on security to keep hackers out. In the meantime, please bear with me and understand that if you find objectionable content as described above, it did not come from me and I am doing my best to keep it off this website. I would hate for the hackers to win and for me to have to either lock down the guest book and forum or discontinue this website.

On another note, several visitors to this website have sent me news articles from both the Albany Times Union and Plattsburg Press Republican that report that Panther Mountain Water Park has a suit pending before the New York State Supreme Court asking that the tax sale of the Frontier Town property be invalidated as PMWP attempted to pay the back taxes before the sale. Thanks to those who sent me the articles. That probably explains why we have not heard more about the new owners' plans for the property. As always, if anyone hears more about this, please email me at the address at the bottom of this page.

And finally, assuming I get ahead of the hackers, I will be adding more to this site, so be sure to check back occasionally - you can determine what has changed since your last visit by looking at the Past Updates page. And for everyone who has, or who will, email me, please have patience if I am slow to reply. I do, eventually, answer every email I receive.

Update for 4 February 2007
I figured it was finally time to remove the Season's Greetings message since, by any stretch of the imagination, the holiday season is over.

Some who have visited this site before may have noticed that it was unavailable around the first of the year. This was because of a problem with the automatic renewal software at the domain registry where the URL is registered. As you can see, we are back online, but during that period this site dropped off the Google results for Frontier Town searches. Hopefully this site will regain its previously high placement in the results for Google searches.

When I started this website in 1999, I was surprised that there were no other websites dedicated to Frontier Town. Over the intervening years, I have continually added to this site as I have had the time. Recently I find that I have less time than in the past, partly because my kids are older and demand more of my time and attention, and partly because I have gotten involved in an old hobby once again. I am a model railroader and I railroad in three scales - 1:87 (HO) on a layout I am building in my basement, 1:8 (1.5" scale, 7.25" gauge) on a rideable railroad I have just started work on that I will be building in my backyard once the snow goes, and 1:1, albeit 2-foot gauge (which is what the Frontier Town Railroad was - one of my prized possesions are a couple of spikes from the Frontier Town Railroad) at the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway (which, interestingly enough, never actually made it to either Waterville or Farmington, and whose website you can see if you click here). Because I find that I just don't have the time to devote to the Frontier Town website that I used to, I have been adding things to make it easier for others who are interested in Frontier Town to interact with each other without me needing to be involved. The Guest Book was one such thing, and it has turned out very well. With this update, I am trying another experiment - I have added a forum so that visitors to this site can interact more easily. I will keep an eye on it, but you must realize that I do not control all of the content that is posted to the forum, so if something objectionable is posted before I get a chance to delete it please understand that it represents the views of the poster and not my views. You can access the forum if you click here, or from the link at the bottom of this page.

I still don't know what the new owners plan to do with the majority of the park. As always, if anyone hears, please email me at the address at the bottom of this page.

And finally, I still have stuff that I would like to add to this site, but I don't know when I will find time. From time to time I will be adding more, so be sure to check back occasionally - you can determine what has changed since your last visit by looking at the Past Updates page. And for everyone who has, or who will, email me, please have patience if I am slow to reply. I do, eventually, answer every email I receive.

Update for 25 November 2006
Season's Greetings
A picture of Frontier Town during the winter from an earlier time. This is from the same visitor to this website that supplied the winter pictures of Frontier Town I used on this site last year, and I think that the juxtaposition of the stages at rest, the pines and the snow is another fitting combination of Frontier Town and the peaceful spirit of this time of year. May that spirit touch all of you who visit this website, and I wish you all a wonderful New Year.
Finally got a chance to add the memories that visitors to this site had emailed me before I added the Guest Book to the Memories page. Check them out by following the Memories link below, and leave your own memory, or just check out others, by following the Guest Book link. I also updated a few captions in the Picture Galleries - I learned more about th J Bar E motel from Jim Liberty's granddaughter and was given the correct name of Swift Eagle's wife, which is Chee Chee Bird Eagle, by their great-granddaughter. Follow the Picture Galleries link below and follow the links marked "updated" from there to see these updates.

Still don't know what the new owners plan to do with the majority of the park. As always, if anyone hears, please email me at the address at the bottom of this page.

There is still a lot of stuff that I would like to add to this site, but time is always short. As I can steal the time, I will be adding more, so be sure to check back from time to time - you can determine what has changed since your last visit by looking at the Past Updates page. And for everyone who has, or who will, email me, please have patience if I am slow to reply. I do, eventually, answer every email I receive.

Update for 20 August 2006
I have been so busy with other things this summer that I have had little time to devote to updating this site. One of my favorite things to do is to move memories that vistiors to this site share with me in email to the Memories page. As I fall farther and farther behind in doing so, I ahve finally decided to give a Guest Book for this site a try. I have seen guestbooks abused by spammers on other sites I visit, so this is just an experiment - if I see my Guest Book being abused I will discontinue it. But to be part of this experiment, or to see what others have to say, you can Click Here or follow the Guest Book link off the Memories page.

Update for 29 May 2006
My other hobby, model railroading, and the fact that my oldest is graduating from high school this year, have kept me very busy this spring, and I have not had much time to work on the website. But on this holiday weekend I felt the urge to revisit Frontier Town. This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and the coming of summer always heightened my anticipation of my family's annual trip to Frontier Town. Judging by the increased volume of emails I have received as the weather has gotten nicer, I am not the only one who makes the association between summer and Frontier Town. I have started to add pictures from all of my family's visits to Frontier Town that I have pictures from (see the Picture Galleries page), I've added a new and different view of Frontier Town to the History of Frontier Town page, and thanks to an email from a visitor to this site, I have a few more places listed on the Where to see some of Frontier Town today page.
Still don't know what the new owners plan to do with the majority of the park. As always, if anyone hears, please email me at the address at the bottom of this page.

Update for 12 March 2006
I made a minor few changes today - I changed the wording on the The Passing of an Era page, removed the link to the Looking For page and changed one caption on the Slides from the 50s page (accessible from the Picture Galleries link).
As I received some positive feedback on the picture of the Frontier Town church in winter that I had displayed, I have kept the picture of Main Street in the snow in my update - it will probably stay until spring comes.
Still don't know what the new owners plan to do with the majority of the park. As always, if anyone hears, please email me at the address at the bottom of this page.

There is still so much that I would like to add to this site, but time is always short, particularly right now as I am in the middle of changing jobs. Update for 18 February 2006
I made quite a few changes this time - there is a new page of Slides from the 50s, accessed from the Picture Galleries page, I corrected the captions on two of the pictures on Pictures from Sandra Baumann - Page 5 , also accessed from the Picture Galleries page (thanks go out to Doug Bensen and Harold Bessey for the correct information) and I added two memories to the Memories page. I also have heard that Adirondack Animal Land is looking to sell the Frontier Town Railroad equipment that they purchased at the contents auction - see the Where to see some of Frontier Town today page for more information.

Update for 29 January 2006
Not much of a change in today's update but I figured it was time to stop wishing everyone Season's Greetings for another year. I did receive some positive feedback on the picture of the Frontier Town church in winter that I had displayed, so I have included a picture of Main Street in the snow. I was advised via email that the Macy's Thanksgivings Day parade pictured on the page of pictures from Harold Bessey (Click here to see them) was probably not 1959. Researching the two movies advertised on the marquees, I believe that it was instead 1954 so I have changed those captions.

Update for 5 December 2005
Season's Greetings
A picture of the church at Frontier Town during the winter that I obtained from a visitor to my web site. I think it is a perfect combination of Frontier Town and the peaceful spirit of this time of year. May that spirit touch all of you who visit this website, and I wish you all a wonderful New Year.

Update for 13 November 2005 Sandra Baumann has sent me more pictures of Frontier Town, so I have re-arranged the page I had, and added a second page of her pictures to make them easier to view (and more pictures are on the way, so the second page will grow larger than it is now at a future date). Harold Bessey identified the log motel on the page of pictures from Joshua Hebert, and sent along a picture of the Route 9 sign today, which I have added to that page. All these pictures can be seen from the Picture Galleries link below. Still don't know what the new owners plan to do with the majority of the park. Update for 10 October 2005 Another holiday weekend and I am able to steal a little more time to update the site. It is hard to believe that it was a year ago this weekend that the Frontier Town contents auction was held. Still don't know what the new owners plan to do with the majority of the park. If anyone hears, please email me at the address at the bottom of this page. I have received more fantastic pictures from a number of sources. Joshua Hebert is working on an 8th grade school project about Frontier Town. He recently interviewed Harold Bessey, a former employee, outside of Frontier Town. His grandmother, Joan Hebert, sent me some pictures of the Frontier Town entrances taken at the time of the interview. She also provides an update on the bears, Molly and Dolly. Sandra Baumann sent me pictures spanning almost three decades, from circa 1954 to circa 1971. All these pictures can be seen from the Picture Galleries link below.

There is still so much that I would like to add to this site, but time is always short. As I can steal the time, I will be adding more, so be sure to check back from time to time. End of Update

Update for 4 September 2005 It was a busy summer - I didn't get any time to make updates to this site. But now that the Labor Day weekend has given me a little break, I was able to add a memory and a number of great pictures from Harold Bessey, who worked at Frontier Town during the summers of 1953, '54, '56 and '57. You can see the email he sent me on the Memories page and you can get to the pictures he sent me from the Picture Galleries page.

There is still so much that I would like to add to this site, but time is always short. As I can steal the time, I will be adding more, so be sure to check back from time to time. End of Update

Update for 17 July 2005 My wife and I made a trip to the Adirondacks earlier this summer and some of the pictures we took of items from Frontier Town that have found new life in new homes can be seen on the Where to see some of Frontier Town today page. I added a quote from Doug to the memories page. Don't look for it at the bottom because I placed it next to another quote, I think you will see the reason why when you read it, and I moved Curt's quote up below it because it turns out Doug and Curt are brothers. And I changed the picture at the bottom of the page that shows the Frontier Town sign I bought at the auction last fall.

There is still so much that I would like to add to this site, but time is always short. As I can steal the time, I will be adding more, so be sure to check back from time to time. End of Update

Update for 9 & 14 June 2005 I received some wonderful pictures of Frontier Town from a visit that Deanna Ranneklev made in 1993 - these pictures are viewable from the Picture Galleries page. There are two new quotes on the Memories page and I added another postcard to the History of Frontier Town page. I have also added a picture of a recent addition to my toy gun collection, a Nichols Model 61, to my Toy Guns page, which is accessible off the Passing of an Era page.

There is still so much that I would like to add to this site, but time is always short. As I can steal the time, I will be adding more, so be sure to check back from time to time. End of Update

Update for 21 February 2005 I received some wonderful pictures of Frontier Town from visits that Christine Cardi made in 1970 and 1979 - these pictures are viewable from the Picture Galleries page. I have also added a memory from her to the Memory page.

There is still so much that I would like to add to this site, but time is always short. As I can steal the time, I will be adding more, so be sure to check back from time to time. End of Update

Update for 12 and 13 February 2005 I added the The Passing of an Era page and the My Toy Guns page (accessed through the The Passing of an Era page), and added a new memory to the Memory page. Update for 9 January 2005
The holidays are over and, with the new "Things to Do at Frontier Town" page that can be accessed from the "Picture Galleries" page, I've had a chance to make a start at adding the material I want to include in this site this year. As I get the time, I will be adding more so be sure to check back from time to time.

Update for 4 December 2004
Season's Greetings
An ornament my wife bought for me on our 1997 trip. As she said when we took the decorations out after Thanksgiving, "It's a good thing we got it then." This is a busy time of year. There are many things I have that I would like to add to the website, but I think that they will have to wait until the end of the year. For everyone who has, or who will, email me over the next few weeks, please have patience if I am slow to reply. Check back after the New Year for more changes on the site.

Update for 21 November 2004

I have added a new page - "Looking For". Access it from the new link below. I have also added the bears, Molly and Dolly, to the "Where to see some of Frontier Town today" page. Access that page from a link below as well.

Update for 6 November 2004

Frontier Town as it existed for 52 years is gone. The contents of the park were auctioned on 9 & 10 October 2004 and the land that the park sits on was auctioned in two parcels on 21 October 2004. One parcel contains the A-Frame, and the purchaser has stated that he plans to resell it at some point. The other parcel contains the park itself, and the purchaser has not made his intentions for the land known. (I got this information from an article that appeared in the Plattsburg Press Republican on 26 October 2004.) Panther Mountain Water Park retained two undeveloped parcels. The New York Times contained an article on 18 October 2004 that said the following:

Mr. Delafrange [Ken Delafrange, president of PMWP] will retain a sliver of the property, which includes a gas station and a hotel, and he hopes to do something with it." I'm 59 years old and to play cowboys and Indians for a living isn't the worst thing in the world."

End of Update

Updated 15 October 2004 I attended the liquidation auction of the contents of Frontier Town at Gokey's Trading Post in North Hudson on 9 October 2004. There were hundreds of people in attendance. I bought the sign pictured to the right. It appears as if it might have originally been at the bottom of a larger sign, as the top of this sign is rough cut and not beveled like its other sides. If anyone knows where this sign might have been located in Frontier Town, I would really appreciate it if you would email me and let me know. Looking at all the contents that were auctioned, it came home to me how Frontier Town would never be the same as I remembered it, even if the new owner of the land should decide to use it for some type of western themed attraction. The new owner will be decided on 21 October 2004, when Essex County auctions it off for delinquent taxes. Once the auction takes place, I would greatly appreciate any information that anyone can give me about the new owners and their plans. Updated
Updated 28 September 2004 I have learned that the contents of Frontier Town are being auctioned at Gokey's Trading Post in North Hudson on 9 and 10 October. Updated
Updated 27 September 2004 I have received a press release from the people who will be rescuing the two bears from Frontier Town. Click here to read the release. Updated
Updated 23 September 2004 I have learned from a number of people (thank those of you who emailed me) that Essex County has seized the Frontier Town property for delinquent taxes and will be auctioning it off on 21 October of this year. The Albany Times Union (Times Union Archives) quotes Ed Haroff, president of the Schroon Lake auction company that will sell the property, as saying that there has been interest. I can only hope that the new owner will want to preserve at least a little bit of the park. If anyone hears more about this tax sale or plans that the new owner may have, I would appreciate it if you would let me know. Updated
new (23 September 2004) I have not had as much time to update this site as I would like, but the news in the Updated section(s) above prompted me to take a few minutes and do some re-arranging. I put the brief history of what has been happening to Frontier Town that was in the Updated section on its own page, Past Updates. After the auctions, the above updates will go there also. The link to the pictures that was here in this "new" section is now on a new, Picture Galleries, page. I hope to add more pictures in the not too distant future. I have also added a page of Memories that I have received from people who have found my page. I will also be adding to that page in the future. If you would like to have a memory included, email me at the email address below. new
Updated Fall of 2003 I have learned, by reading past articles from the Albany Times Union (Times Union Archives) that Frontier Town, which had been closed since 1985, was purchased in 1988 by Panther Mountain Water Park of Rivervale NJ. PMWP operated Frontier Town until 1998. They started construction on, and then abandoned, a second Frontier Town in Branson MO during the mid-nineties. Currently Frontier Town may be foreclosed upon by Essex County, which is owed back taxes. Ken DeLafrange, the president of PMWP, has stated that he is trying to raise financing to pay off the taxes and possibly reopen the park. Updated
